What Is Propecia

Propecia is a prescription medication that contains the active element finasteride and is used to treat male pattern baldness and benign prostatic hyperplasia. Finasteride is one of only two drugs currently approved by the US FDA to treat male pattern baldness. It is a member of the class of medications called 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. The effect of 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme that transforms testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), is blocked by these drugs, which prevents hair loss. Propecia is well-known for its effectiveness in promoting hair growth at the crown of the head but it is not yet clear whether it can help treat a receding hairline or not.

Propecia is also used to help shrink the prostate gland and relieve the symptoms of BPH – trouble urinating, increased urinary urgency, etc. According to reports, individuals with BPH who use finasteride can frequently avoid prostate surgery in the long run.

Brand-name Propecia is a medication produced by Merck and available in tablet form. Each octagonal film-coated Propecia tablet contains 1 mg of finasteride, features an etched stylized P logo on one side and the word "PROPECIA" on the reverse. In addition to finasteride, Propecia also contains inactive ingredients like as lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate, and red ferric oxide. When prescribed for hair loss treatment, 1 tablet of Propecia is taken with or without food at the same time each day. Noticeable results are usually observed around 3 months after the beginning of treatment. When the medicine is discontinued, the increase in hair volume is normally lost within a year. The generic versions of Propecia, usually sold in pharmacies simply as finasteride, are less expensive than their brand-name equivalent. The generics include the same chemicals as Propecia and are also designed for daily oral administration at a dosage of 1 mg when used as a hair loss therapy. Finasteride is also available in a 5 mg strength to treat benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH).

Propecia is only prescribed to adult men and can have serious adverse effects in women and children. Using or even handling this drug while pregnant is dangerous since it can enter the bloodstream through the skin and cause harm to the growing male fetus.

Propecia Side Effects

When using Propecia, some patients notice a decrease in the amount of semen released during ejaculation. This side effect is not harmful, although some men may continue to experience it long after stopping medication.

Other documented negative effects of Propecia include:

  • Breast tenderness
  • Infertility
  • Depression, behavior changes and psychiatric disorders
  • Testicular pain

Rare but possible is allergy to Propecia. Skin rashes, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue are some of the signs that an allergic reaction may manifest itself with. A medical practitioner should be contacted promptly if you experience any of the abovementioned symptoms as they may potentially be life-threatening.

Propecia works great! My hair is definitely coming back. The only downside that I can think of is that it really takes it a while to start working (3 months in my case). I was actually about to quit taking it because I wasn’t seeing any changes but then it finally kicked in. I can finally look into the mirror without flinching and am no longer shedding hair like a dog after every shower.

I have to admit I was very nervous when starting on Propecia because I read somewhere that it can lower your libido big time. I’m a relatively young guy, so sex is an important part of my life and I’m not ready to trade it off, not even for a head full of hair. Well, luckily, it’s not the case for me – so far everything is looking good and I’m already in the second year of my treatment. The crown of my head is looking absolutely normal already whereas the hair remains kind of thin on top and temples but I’m glad to say I’m not losing much anymore.
