What Is Neurontin Used for?
Neurontin is one of the brands that gabapentin-based medications are available under. Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant drug used to manage epilepsy and peripheral neuropathic pain caused by neural damage or certain conditions affecting the nerves or neurons, such as diabetes or shingles, for example. Neuropathic pain is often described as burning, shooting or tingling. What makes gabapentin and similar neuropathic pain medications different from regular painkillers is the fact that they don't give instant relief from the pain. Instead, it usually takes 1 to 2 weeks for it to get better. Gabapentin must also be used regularly to maintain its effectiveness. However, it still remains the medication of choice for treating neuropathic pain since regular painkillers, such as ibuprofen, are often not strong enough to relieve it.
Neurontin is manufactured by Pfizer, one of the world's premier biopharmaceutical companies. It is taken by mouth and is available in the form of an oral solution, as tablets and capsules. Each of these dosage forms is offered in several different strengths. Tablets, for example, are available in 600mg and 800mg strengths while the capsules are available in 100mg, 300mg and 400mg strengths. Neurontin oral solution contains 250 mg gabapentin per 5 ml.
Side effects of Neurontin
Just like other drugs, Neurontin also has some side effects such as the ones listed below:
- Vertigo
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Diarrhea
All antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) can cause behavior changes, and Neurontin is not an exception. It can potentially trigger suicidal thoughts and behavioral abnormalities. Children using Neurontin are at a higher risk of such side effects as lack of concentration, aggressive behavior and memory issues. This medicine can exacerbate respiratory symptoms in patients already suffering from breathing issues.
Since dizziness is one of Neurontin’s common side effects, the patients are advised to refrain from driving and other hazardous activities. If a patient experiences some new or existing worsening symptom due to intake of Neurontin, they should contact their doctor instantly.
Although Neurontin rarely causes allergic reactions, they still may occur. These reactions manifest themselves with skin rashes, itching, swelling of the throat, tongue or face, trouble breathing or swallowing. If you experience any of these symptoms after taking Neurontin, seek medical assistance as quickly as possible.
Neurontin dosage
Medical professionals consider multiple factors when recommending the appropriate dosage of Neurontin. These include the patient's condition, response to previous treatment, and body mass (especially in pediatric patients). You may be advised to start with a low dosage and then slowly increase it until the desired effect is reached. Generally, the average dosage in children is 25-35 mg per kg of body mass per day, while in adults the total daily dosage may reach up to 3600 mg. This medicine is effective as long as its concentration remains constant in the body, so it is crucial to take it around the same time each day. It is usually taken 3 times a day, with or without meals. It is highly advisable not to take more gabapentin than prescribed because an overdose can cause an array of serious side effects including but not limited to unconsciousness, dizziness, and double vision. Before discontinuing the treatment, slowly reduce the dose over at least one week because ceasing the intake of gabapentin abruptly may lead to a seizure.
Comments:
The beginning of my treatment with Neurontin was not a smooth ride because I was constantly feeling dopey. It took me a couple of weeks to get used to it and I’m glad to say that I have finally had a good night’s sleep for the first time in years! I had to slowly increase the dose though and I’m currently at 3000mg per day, which is pretty close to the maximum recommended dose, so I’m not quite sure yet how we will continue with the treatment when a dose adjustment is required. Anyway, so far everything is looking good.

I have type 2 diabetes running in the family and was diagnosed as pre-diabetic myself about 4 years ago. One of my most bothersome symptoms is (or actually was) peripheral neuropathy, which manifests itself with numb and tingling spots on my back. I’m currently on 200mg of Neurontin daily and feeling absolutely normal, no side effects or anything.
