Smoking-Cessation Medication Options
Smoking-cessation treatment can include behavioral support and FDA-approved medications. The practical pharmacy questions are which product is being considered, whether it is available without a prescription or requires one, and whether it is appropriate with the person’s medical history and other medicines.
Nonprescription nicotine replacement
FDA identifies nicotine patches, gum, and lozenges as over-the-counter nicotine-replacement therapy (NRT) options for adults. Product strengths and instructions differ, so the current Drug Facts label should be followed.
Prescription options
FDA lists nicotine nasal spray and nicotine inhaler as prescription nicotine products, and varenicline and bupropion as prescription non-nicotine smoking-cessation medicines. These require clinician involvement and should not be selected solely from an online comparison.
What a pharmacy can help clarify
A pharmacist can help identify OTC product types, review label questions, check prescription availability, and explain whether a prescription or prescriber clarification is required. Price and insurance coverage can differ between OTC and prescription products.
