What Is Oseltamivir Phosphate?

Tamiflu is an oral antiviral therapy for influenza. During seasonal flu epidemics or after contact with an infected individual, it may prevent the sickness. Tamiflu cannot replace the flu vaccine.

Tamiflu is effective against type A and B flu viruses. Tamiflu may also treat H1N1 swine flu, a type A influenza virus subtype.

Tamiflu is prescribed to adults, children, and newborns over two weeks old. As soon as you notice flu symptoms such a sore throat, runny nose, fever, or cough, start therapy. Tamiflu works best within two days of symptoms.

Oseltamivir phosphate, the active component in Tamiflu, inhibits viral reproduction by attaching to the protein neuraminidase. Consequently, Tamiflu lowers illness duration and alleviates certain symptoms.

Gilead Sciences developed tamiflu in 1995, and Currently produces it. Basel-based pharmaceutical firm Hoffmann-La Roche. Tamiflu is available as capsules and as a powder used to prepare oral suspension. 30 mg, 45 mg, and 75 mg capsules are available. The 30 mg, 45 mg, and 75 mg capsules are light yellow, grey, and grey with a light-yellow cap, respectively. All three forms have the word “Roche” as well as their respective strength printed on them. The powder form has the strength of 6 mg/mL.

For five days, adults and children over 12 should take one 75mg Tamiflu capsule twice a day to treat flu. If the patient has renal impairment or is under 12, the dosage may be lowered.

When using Tamiflu to prevent a flu infection, the patients are recommended to take the same dose but only once a day.

Tamiflu can cause stomach upset, so taking it with food or washing it down with a glass of milk may help to alleviate the unpleasant gastrointestinal symptoms.

Oseltamivir Side Effects

Tamiflu's most prevalent negative effects are:

• Headaches
• Loose stools and/or diarrhea
• Stomach upset
• Nausea/vomiting

More serious side effects of Tamiflu are very rare. These may include:

• Tremors
• Hallucinations
• Feeling confused
• Abnormal behavior

Call 911 if you have a Tamiflu allergy. Itching, swelling, hives, or hard breathing may indicate an allergic response.
